Despite clearing DSSSB exam, not selected

Saturday, 02 March 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

The struggle of the 36-year-old physically disabled Rekha Rani to become a teacher finally yielded a desired result when she cleared the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) for the post of Assistant Teacher in Delhi Government school but Rani’s dream shattered when the Board did not shortlisted her for the position despite she scored more than the eligibility criteria.

“Despite several difficulties, I studied and worked hard to become a teacher and after a long time of struggle, I qualified the examination but even after that the DSSSB did not shortlisted my name for the vacant post. Result was out on February 26th and since then even after being physically handicapped I am travelling daily to register a complaint at the DSSSB office but I got no help neither I got any receipt to my complaint nor received any mail,” said Rani.

The candidate wrote two complaint letters to the DSSSB Chairperson, on February 21 and February 25, but the Board failed to elicit any reply. .

Despite the lackadaisical attitude of Board, the candidate moved to the High Court and sought help from State commissioner of Persons with Disabilities against DSSSB.

Taking cognizance of the complaint filed by the prospective candidate, the TD Dhariyal, State Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities on Friday issued a showcause notice to the DSSSB Chairperson Geetanjli Gupta asking her to submit the reasons and comments from the Board for not short listing even after she qualified the examination and also for not responding to the two complaints filed by the candidate.

The Commissioner who has powers equivalent to a civil court, asked the chairperson to submit the reply to the showcause notice within a week.   However, the chairperson of DSSSB did not respond to the numerous calls and texts made by The Pioneer.

Rani who has more than 40 per cent locomotor disability, had appeared for the examinations conducted by the Board for the post of assistant nursery teacher in September 2018. The cutoff under the Physically Handicapped (PH) category was 70 percent and the candidate scored 71.75 fulfilling the eligibility criteria.

Moreover, the Delhi Commission for Woman (DCW) has also issued a notice to the DSSSB on the matter.
