In a bid to ensure transparency, members of National Medical Commission (NMC) will be elected through lottery system on 14th of this month, Union Minister for Health Dr Harshvardhan said on Friday.
Talking to reporters here said that the entire process of constituting the NMC will be fully transparent and media will also be involved in selection process. He said, NMC will bring historic reforms in the medical education system in the country.
An official in the Health Ministry said that once the NMC becomes effective, Medical council of India will automatically be abolished.
He said, there is also a high possibility that NMC will be able to implement its rules, regulations and guidelines for medical education system from next academic year.
The Act provides for setting up of NMC in place of the Medical Council of India for development and regulation of all aspects of medical education, profession and institutions.
Several relevant sections of the Act came into force on September 2 after which the Union Health Ministry on August 9 wrote to to all chief secretaries, home secretaries of UTs and state medical councils seeking nominations for selection of members of the NMC.
From 2020 admission to all medical colleges through NEET
From 2020, admission to MBBS courses in all medical colleges across the country including JIPMER and all the AIIMS will be through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET),
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announced on Friday. AIIMS and JIPMER have also been brought under the NEET ambit now.
