Popular Odia film and TV actress Anita Das passed away at her Mission Road residence here on Friday following a massive cardiac stroke. She was 62 and a spinster.
The mortal remains of Das were cremated at the Puri Swargadwar, where her nephew lit the funeral pyre in the presence of several cine stars.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and many other leading personalities expressed grief over the death of the veteran actress, who had made notable contributions to both Odia cinema and TV industries.
In her career spanning over three decades, Das had won the hearts of cine goers for her powerful roles in films like ‘Suna Chadhei’, and ‘Naga Phasa’, ‘Krishna Sudama’, ‘Ramayana’, ‘Swapna Sagara’, Gadhi Janile Ghara Sundara’, ‘Maa-o-Mamata’ and ‘Ki Heba Sua Posile’ to name a few.
Mainly, her role as mother in a large number of films earned her immense popularity.
Anita Das’ birthplace Jajpur Road deeply mourned her sudden demise. Her father Banamali Das was a freedom fighter.
Her younger brother Sarada Prasad Das recalled how she acted in many plays and dramas when she was reading in school and college.
“Anita’s sudden death is a great shock for me,” said her brother-in-law (sister’s husband) Mayadhar Nayak, who is a veteran trade union leader.
