Medical students hold dharna at GDMC

Wednesday, 19 December 2018 | PNS | Dehradun

Angered over the majority of the students flunking the practical examination, the students of first year MBBS course of Government Doon Medical College ( GDMC) have been staging a sit-in at the college since Monday evening.

The students are particularly peeved with the head of the department (HoD) of Anatomy of the college, Dr S K Agarwal as 40 out of 52 students have failed the practical examination held on the subject of Anatomy. One student sitting on the dharna said that the HoD Anatomy had openly told the students that he would see to it that all the students flunked the practical examinations.

On Tuesday, many parents of the agitating students also joined their wards in the protest. A mother of an agitating student said, “It is a mystery as to why the students are scoring low marks in practical examination of one particular subject while they are scoring high in other subjects. It is not that it has happened this year. The trend has been going on over the past three years. However, this year, the students’ patience has run out and quite naturally so,” she said.

Quizzed over the matter, the officiating principal of the college, Dr Navin Thapliyal said that he has asked the students to submit their written representation. “But they are yet to do so.  I along with other staff members am in regular touch with the agitating students. We have asked them to withdraw the agitation. But they are refusing to heed our plea,” he said.

Queried over the allegation of a teacher deliberately making the students to score low in the practical exam, he said that no professor could have deliberately failed the students. “The examinations are taken by the university and so the university would be requested to review the result. The students should keep patience till the review is made,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the vice- chancellor of HNB Medical University, Dr Hem Chandra has constituted an inquiry to investigate the matter. On the report of the inquiry committee, the university would take action further action, the university sources said.
