Noted Odia film actress, producer and director Parbati Ghosh alias Chapala Nayak passed away at a private hospital here late on Sunday night. She was 85. Her husband Gour Ghosh, also a leading cine actor, had predeceased her.
Parbati Ghosh’s demise was informed by her brother and noted music director Swarup Nayak on Monday morning.
The first Odia woman film producer and director, the movies in which Parbati had acted and directed are still fondly remembered by people. She was born in Cuttack, which was the centre of her activities of art and culture.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik mourned Parbati’s demise. “I am deeply shocked at the passing away of veteran film personality Parbati Ghosh. She was an icon of women’s empowerment and one of the greatest gifts to Odia cinema. Her departure is a great loss to the film industry. May her soul rest in peace,” Patnaik said.
