BJP gets Mayor, Cong Sr Dy Mayor

While the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday got the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor uncontested in the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections, Congress-backed Pramila Gaje Kabalana, who represented ward number 9, was elected the Senior Deputy Mayor, defeating BJP’s Bhram Prakash Yadav.

Pramila Kabalana got 23 votes out of a total 35 seats, defeating the BJP's Bhram Prakash Yadav, who got the remaining 12 votes.

Madhu Aazad, who won from ward number 7, and  Sunita Yadav, who represented ward number 33, were unanimously elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively..

This year all the Mayoral posts of the MCG were reserved for the women. While Moyor post is reserved for Schedule Caste (SC) the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor were for general categories.

The MCG polls to 35 wards were held on September 24 and the results were announced on the same day.

The BJP fought on all 35 seats on party’s symbol lotus but managed to win only 14. The Congress didn't fight the MCG elections on the party’s symbol. While the Indian National lok Dal (INlD) fought on the party symbol but managed to win only 1 seat. Around 20 independents candidates were able to win their seat.

It was also a record that around 15 women candidates won in their respective wards in the MCG elections 2017 so far. Out of 5,58,884 eligible voters, 3,12,372 voters polled their votes during the election. 202 candidates were in the fray from 35 wards.

On September 27, Union Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh, who is also the local Member of Parliament, managed to bring six Independents into the party camp. A few days later, Haryana PWD Minister Rao Narbir Singh also inducted another six independent councillors into the BJP. After the including of another 12 independent councillors in the BJP camp the party councillors figure reached 26.

However, the BJP Senior Deputy Mayor contestant, Bhram Prakash Yadav got only 12 votes. “We will discuss the matter with the party senior leader that how a Congress supported candidate was elected as the  Senior Deputy Mayor. Some internal elements in the party ditched us,” said Rao Narbir Singh.

Meanwhile, three elected candidates promised to work for the people. All the problems in different wards will be addressed at the earliest.

Currently, the BJP is the ruling party in the State. Mayor Madhu Aazad is from the Rao Inderjit Singh camp. Both Rao Narbir Singh and Rao Inderjit Singh along with Divisional Commissioner Dr D Suresh, MCG Commissioner, V Umashankar and other officials were present during the election procedure. The newly mayor was later sworn at Swantrata Senani Zila Parishad Hall in Gurugram.
