RGPV Engg students can write exam in Hindi too

Thursday, 15 October 2015 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Papers of engineering will be in Hindi along with English in engineering colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya from next session. A student can write the papers either in English or Hindi as per their choice. This was stated by Higher and Technical Education Minister Umashankar Gupta at a meeting of officers of private universities on Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at RGPV here on Wednesday.

Gupta said that implementation of CBCS in all private universities should be considered. He said that government and private universities should share their best practices. He also launched e-Thesis/Desertation Submission System. Gupta said that old research papers should also be uploaded on website.

Vice Chancellor Prof Piyush Trivedi informed that through CBCS, students will be free to choose courses as per their talent and academic capacities. CBCS maintains coordination of courses with liberalisation and globalisation. It provides mobility to students to continue their studies in any institution throughout the world by transferring their credits.

Not only providing choice of courses to students, CBCS also gives autonomy to institutions in selection of courses. They would be free to continue old pattern also. Students of all categories will benefit from this system ensuring open learning atmosphere on the choice of students.

The system will be semester-based but students will need only total 180 credits for BE degree. These 180 credits will be divided into several parts due to which students will have opportunity to study various subjects. A student will have to take minimum 16 credits in each subject. For studying next year, he/she should earn minimum 22 credits in previous year. In this way, 90 credits out of 180 would be for basic elective course and remaining 90 credits for study of basic science, engineering science and other faculties.

In this system, students must attend classes regularly. Credits will be counted on the basis of students’ attendance and constant evaluation. Students should obtain prescribed credits in every subject’s paper. CPG grade will be given to students by multiplying credits earned through attendance with credit earned through exam. A student can earn extra credit if he/she chooses course in addition to core subject. Earlier, a student could pursue graduation level education by studying only the subjects of his department. Now, students will have alternative to pursue excellence in subjects other than his departmental subjects.

The system will have 5 main subjects including basic science core, department core, engineering science core, humanities core and under alternative, departmental alternative and open alternative.

Credit transfer: If due to some reasons, a student cannot bear burden of studies or falls ill, he is free to study less courses and earn less credits and compensate it in next semester.

Comprehensive and constant evaluation: In this way, student can make right choice of credits and undertake constant evaluation of his academic capacity himself. Compliance with global grading system: All major higher education institutions in the world are adopting uniform credit system. For example, European credit transfer system (ECTS) is prevalent in Europe while Australia has “National Qualification Framework”. Britain has Earning Credits and Transfer System (ECTS). Choice-based credit system is also in place in higher education in America and Japan.

Benefits of alternative based credit system: CBCS gives freedom to students to choose courses of their own inclination, which is like ‘cafeteria’ point of view.

Under CBCS, students can choose subjects in accordance with their speed. They can choose alternative of additional subject and get more credits than necessary. Under this system, every student whether weak or strong has freedom to choose subjects as per his efficiency. Students do not remain confined to departmental subjects. In this way, their job-opportunities increase. It is easy to get admitted in national and international universities on the basis of credit transfer.

Controller Mohan Sen gave a presentation on CBCS. Registrar SK Jain proposed  vote of thanks.
