The egoism of husband and rejection by wife formed the story of the play Darpachurna staged on Tuesday at Shaheed Bhavan Auditorium. Marking the fourth day of the theatre fest, story of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay Darpachurna was staged before the theatre buffs of the city. Directed by Bharti Sharma the play was performed by the artistes of Rang Dhoot, New Delhi.
Adopted from the story by Sharat Chandra with the same name, the play revolves around the life of a husband and a wife and their hardships they face in their relationship. Notably, Sharat Chandra always described feminism in his plays and other writings in a different way, so was done in Darpachurna.Darpachurna means the break of egoism. The story is all about the life of a person Narendra and his wife Indu. Both of them deal with different identities and personalities. Both of them also believes in their own individualism and facts of life.
Narendra is an artist and a writer. He is always busy in his work and very rarely pays attention towards his family life and his wife Indu. On the other hand, Indu believes that Narendra is not in love with her anymore so he is always busy doing his work. Narendra and Indu belonged to upper class family so they never had a financial issue among them, but what was lacking between them was the quality time for each other.
One day devastated Indu leaves the house only to never return. Then, some misfortune happens with Narendra about which Indu is never told. Bimla, sister-in-law of Indu tells her that Narendra is dealing with a very hard time. listening to this, Indu gets upset and returns to Narendra. But it was too late for Indu and Narendra was almost finished.
Usage of symbolism was tremendous and the play had an unanswered end. Moreover, the matured acting skills of the artistes and the direction were appreciable. The play was like a treat for the theatre buffs of the city.
