Baby steps for this chachu

Puneeit Tejwani, who plays an uncle in lage Raho Chachu on Disney, tells SHAlINI SAKSENA about the show and his character

What happens when three boisterous children move into a bachelor pad is what lage Raho Chachu is all about. Those who have been watching this show will know that for thischachu having a peaceful cup of coffee is just a distant dream. “Parents who have teenaged children will tell you how difficult it is to discipline them and keep them on the right track.

For me, things are a bit more complex. This is because the children I am responsible for, have recently lost their parents and besides coping with this loss, they have to deal with living with a person who has no idea about parenting. So the show is all about dealing with daily problems. It has its fun part where you will see me struggle and get into all sorts of trouble, especially with my soon-to-be father-in-law,” Puneet Tejwani who plays Vivek Kashyap, says.

Interestingly, after having done some serious roles in serials like Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai , Kuch Toh log Kahenge and Kitni Mohabbat Hai-2, Tejwani made a conscious decision to take up this project and do something that posed a challenge and had fun element to it. This is because this businessman (he has a chain of restaurants in Mumbai) turned actor tells you that he is a fun-loving and a bindaas kind of a person in real life.

He tells you that he is a big foodie and when he is not shooting, he can be spotted at one of his restaurants. Acting to him came by chance, he says.  “I am sitting with my girlfriend, my wife now, at a cafe when I was approached and asked if I wanted to do a Cadbury ad. I am a businessman so wanted to know the money I would get. Anyways, I was not paid much but it gave me a lot of exposure. I went on to do eight more ads for the company. From there on I went on to do about 50 ads and then TV happened,” Tejwani says.

Though Bollywood beckons this actor, he wants to take baby steps. “I am still new to this industry. I don’t want to get into movies just because it is a film. I want to first establish myself before I start to even think about doing movies. But if I get a project that interests me, I will definitely take it up,” Tejwani tells you adding that he is a very relaxed and a jovial person.

“So when I was offered this role, I immediately said yes. For me, it doesn’t matter which banner it is, what is important for me that the character that I am being offered is challenging, something where people will remember me by. As chachu, I am all this and much more. The fact that I love children makes my job so much easier yet it tests me at each stage so that I can better myself,” Tejwani says.
