Nearly three lakh people have been affected due to flood in and around Vadodara, the cultural capital of Gujarat, in the last 48 hours. Water level hit the danger mark at all the bridges on River Vishwamaitry, which passes through Vadodara city. looking at the flood fury, the administration has announced to close all the educational institutions on Thursday.
Vadodara received more than 10 inch of rainfall in last 48 hours causing logging problem in the low lying areas. Following heavy rain in the catchment areas, Ajawa Reservoir, on the outskirts of the city, was witnessing heavy income of fresh water. The administration had to open 62 gates of the reservoir as a result of which the Vishwamaitry is overflowing.
Shoulder deep water have been logged in various societies of Vadodara. According to the rescue team nearly 1,000 societies have been facing water logging problem. Sources said that water entered in Sayaji Baug area which encompasses a zoo. Nearly four-feet-deep water has logged in the Sayaji Baug area and the zoo authority has to shift animals and birds to safer places. Most of the bridges on River Vishwamaitry have been closed.
Meanwhile, flood control room in Vadodara on Wednesday evening informed that the water level has started to recede after 7 pm after rain stopped on the upstream areas of Vishwamaitry River. Water level has come down in the river from 34 feet to 33 feet. Flood like situation has also been created in some parts of North and South Gujarat. In North Gujarat, nearly 10 villages have been disconnected. In the Southern part of the State, over 40 villagers on the banks of Narmada River have been alerted.
