Delhi hot & bothered over power cuts

With extreme summer conditions refusing to relent, power cuts in several parts of the city especially the East, West and Central Delhi areas worsened the situation for Delhiites.

Frequent power cuts ranging from 30 minutes to eight hours in Outer, East and Old Delhi areas made people sweat it out for the third consecutive day. long hours of power cut have made residents feel the pinch even as the extreme summer is yet to come. The current peak power demand in Delhi has been 5250 MW which was over 5653 MW on June 6 last year. However, sources in power sector said the maximum demand this year is expected to cross 6,000 MW mark later this month.

Pockets in East Delhi, West Delhi and Central Delhi are more vulnerable to system load-shedding. These include Uttam Nagar, Dwarka, Ghazipur, Mayur Vihar, Geeta Colony, Daryaganj, Walled City, among others. Most of the areas where power is supplied by discom, BSES faced power cuts for nearly two to three hours. This included midnight power cuts in parts of South Delhi like Vasant Vihar, Munirka, Vasant Kunj, Malviya Nagar, South Extension, Chittaranjan Park, Alakananda, Khanpur, Greater Kailash-I, Nehru Place, Jangpura Extension, Nizamuddin, RK Puram, Sarvapriya Vihar and parts of Saket. Some of these areas faced power cuts for more than two hours on Friday and Saturday late night.

The residents of these areas said the power cuts were for shorter durations but they were frequent and thus caused much trouble. The situation was no different in west Delhi where residents of Punjabi Bagh, Rajouri Garden, Janakpuri and Hari Nagar complained of power cuts during the night. “With the rising temperature, the electricity situation has begun to deteriorate. Though the power supply was smooth during the day time, there was power cut for nearly two hours that started after 11 pm on Saturday”, said Savita Chopra, a resident of Hari Nagar. Parts of East and Central Delhi were also affected by the power cuts.

These areas included Karawal Nagar, Mayur Vihar, laxmi Nagar, Karkardooma and Krishna Nagar in East Delhi and parts of Nai Sarak and Chawri Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Delhi Gate, Daryaganj, Patel Nagar and Paharganj in Central Delhi.
