For lakhs of parents in the National Capital, finding a school cab will now be just a click away. To make the school cab system secure for students, the details of the cabs such as their registration number, the routes they traverse, the name of the school and the school principal will soon be uploaded on the Transport Department’s homepage. According to officials, such crucial details will help parents find a registered school cab for their children.

The move is part of the scheme to regularise cabs and the private vans, which presently are doubling up as school cabs in an unauthorised manner. “The Transport Department’s website will display not just the registration number of the cabs but also their routes. This online data will help parents choose a school cab plying in the vicinity. Also, the data the website will display will be of cabs registered with the Department and hence, parents can be rest assured about the safety of their children inside these vehicles,” said a Delhi Government official.

As per the conditions, private cab owners wishing to register as school cab owners will have to maintain the records of the children they will ferry. It has also been mandatory for them to maintain a register containing the names of the parents of the children, name of the school and the school principal. This ready reckoner can be shared with the police in times of crisis management,” he added.

Apart from adhering to these security related issues, the private cabs willing to register under the School Cab Scheme will also be outfitted with safety equipment such as speed governor, GPRS devices, fire extinguisher and a first aid box.  The Global Positioning Device (GPS) will help track the vehicle in the hour of need. “The facility of e-Authorisation Card may also be extended to school cabs to ensure drivers have a valid driving licence, public service badge and authentic police verification vis-à-vis character and antecedents,” he said.
