In a renewed push for electoral reform and local representation, the Shahid Thakurji Pathak Welfare Society has submitted a formal demand letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), urging the creation of a separate assembly seat for Jugsalai. The demand highlights concerns over the underrepresentation of Jugsalai voters in the current electoral framework.
According to the society, the Jugsalai Assembly Constituency, as it stands, includes areas such as Baghbera, Karandih, Kitadih, and Patmada, which often determine the outcome of the elections. This, they argue, dilutes the voice of Jugsalai’s five lakh voters, who, despite forming a majority within the constituency, see little impact on the final result due to the way the votes are distributed.
The demand letter states that while residents of Jugsalai actively participate in the democratic process, their votes have minimal influence in electing their legislative representative.
“The present structure does not reflect the will of Jugsalai residents. The winning candidates often emerge from the adjoining areas, leaving Jugsalai’s core issues unaddressed,” the letter states.
The society has also highlighted the need for fair and localized governance, calling for delimitation of constituencies to ensure that Jugsalai can elect its own representative, one who is more attuned to the region’s unique challenges and development needs.
The demand letter was personally submitted to the Election Commission in Delhi by Chandra Prakash Pathak, National Secretary of the Shahid Thakurji Pathak Welfare Society, during his recent visit. He emphasized that the creation of a separate Jugsalai seat is crucial for ensuring democratic fairness, better governance, and voter confidence in the electoral process.
Jugsalai’s identity and voice must be acknowledged. Our demand is not political but a democratic necessity,” Pathak said after handing over the memorandum.
The society has expressed hope that the Election Commission will give serious consideration to the matter and initiate steps toward delimiting the Jugsalai constituency for better representation in upcoming electoral cycles.
