Wednesday, 11 December 2024 | Staff Reporter | BHOPAL

The icy cold weather conditions have led to intense cold conditions across the state as mercury dipped to 3.5 degree celsius in the night in Pachmarhi which was the lowest of the state.

Citizens chose to remain indoors and those commuting were searching for relief in the sunshine but as soon as they moved inside it was intensely cold.

Nearby region Raisen recorded night at 3.6 degree celsius,Giravar (Shajapur) recorded at 4.1 degree celsius, Rajgarh recorded 5 degree celsius and Piparsama (Shivpuri) recorded 5.3 degree celsius.

The cold weather in Madhya Pradesh, particularly in Bhopal, has intensified due to icy winds. On Tuesday, cold winds swept through major cities including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Shajapur, leading to significant dip in temperatures.

Bhopal recorded a temperature of 23.4  degree celsius during the day, with a significant drop of 4.5 degree celsius at night, bringing the mercury down to 7.8  degree celsius. This was the lowest recorded minimum temperature in the city in the past two years, as last year the minimum temperature was 8.6  degree celsius and in 2022 it was 8.8  degree celsius.

Cold waves were reported in Damoh, Jabalpur, Seoni, Narsinghpur, Sagar, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Vidisha, Rajgarh, Agar-Malwa, Dhar. Due to the changed weather, the day temperature recorded a dip across all the cities.

The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave in Dhar, Guna-Ashoknagar on  December 11, 12 and 13. Usually cold waves are experienced  in the last week of December, but the cold has increased due to snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. There may be a drop in day and night temperature during the next 48 hours.

Especially at night, the mercury may drop by 2-3 degrees. Due to this, the temperature will reach below 10 degrees in many cities.

The icy winds will have the most impact in the northern part. These include districts of Gwalior, Chambal and Ujjain divisions.

According to the Meteorological Department, the second fortnight of December will be the coldest. This period of severe cold will continue till January. In these 40 days, cold waves i.e. cold winds can also blow for 20 to 22 days. However, there is an alert of cold winds in the first fortnight of December itself. This time the coldest will be in Ujjain, Gwalior-Chambal division. The reason is the direct arrival of icy winds.

The cold of December in Bhopal has broken the record of 2 years. In a single night, the mercury dropped by 4.5 degrees to 7.8 degrees, which is the lowest in the last two years. In 2022 and 2023, the minimum temperature was 8.6 and 8.8 degrees. Cold winds are blowing since Tuesday morning. Due to which people have shivered.

While the nights were cold in the last 10 years, the temperature remained high during the day. In the year 2020, the temperature reached 32.6 degrees on December 7. At the same time, the day temperature remained more than 30 degrees in five out of 10 years.
