Denmark Diplomat shares video of garbage dumped on service road in city

Thursday, 09 May 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Denmark’s diplomat to India, Freddy Svane on Wednesday posted a video on social media platform showcasing a service road in New Delhi with heaps of garbage on either side of the road. Expressing his sadness with the state of affairs, the diplomat captioned the video “Lovely and green New Delhi. Many words but no action. Saddened by this.”

The service road falls in between the Danish and Greek embassies in New Delhi and is filled with trash, as shown in a video posted by the diplomat’s X (formerly Twitter) handle “@svane_freddy”. Svane tagged Denmark in India, Chief Minister Office Delhi and Lieutenant Governor Delhi office in the post.

In the video, Svane was seen standing on the road full of trash. In the video, which revealed the dirty road, he said, “Welcome to great, green and trashy New Delhi.” Further, pointing towards the embassies on either side of the service road, he said, “Here we have the Danish embassy and here we have the Greek embassy. This used to be a service lane, but you see, it is just full of trash, and people come here to do whatever they like to do here.”

The Danish diplomat also hoped that someone would see the video and take action on it. “So, I hope somebody will listen to this and take action,” he said while sounding disappointed.  “No more nice words, just actions, my friend,” he said while ending the video with a “dhanyawad (Thank you)” in Hindi.

The diplomat tagged the official X account of the Royal Danish Embassy in India, Delhi Chief Minister’s Office, and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor.

The video garnered more than two lakhs views in less than four hours with varied response from the users. While some blamed the jailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the cleanliness, others commented that the issue pertains to New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), which comes under the Centre. Some users also called this “embarrassment on global level.”
