War of words between Modi, Mamata

Saturday, 27 April 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

War of words ensued between the top BJP and TMC leadership after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attacked the Mamata Banerjee Government for selling Government jobs, indulging in appeasement politics so as to subvert the national interests.

Addressing a massive election rally at Malda in North Bengal the Prime Minister referred to the recent Calcutta High Court order chucking out 25,753 illegally appointed school teachers and non-teaching staff the Prime Minister said “here the TMC Government does the corruption and the people have to pay its price … see how 26,000 people lost their jobs because … they took loans to pay the TMC leaders for their jobs and now they are jobless”.

The Chief Minister immediately hit back saying the BJP was behind the loss of jobs faced by the school staff.

“The BJP is eater of jobs … we are creating jobs and the BJP is taking it away … they cannot give jobs but can take it … it is the BJP which is conspiring against the TMC and the people of Bengal,” she said.

Apparently taking note of the polarized atmosphere in Malda which has two Parliamentary constituencies and where the minorities voters account for about 55 per cent of the total population the Prime Minister targeted the Mamata Banerjee Government as also the Congress for their alleged appeasement policy even as he said that though the two parties were not fighting the polls together in Bengal “they follow the same policy of appeasement and may go to any extent for this … TMC and Congress are saying that if they come to power they will do away with CAA [Citizenship (Amendment) Act] … which means that they can do anything for their appeasement politics even if that amounts to compromise with the national interest.”

Modi was campaigning for the phase three elections which are to take place on May 7.

Slamming the Congress for the issue inheritance tax the Prime Minister said how the tri-colour party was planning to introduce 55 percent tax on property after a person’s death. “Your children may not inherit your life’s savings as the Congress is planning 55 percent tax on your property after your death.

The Congress Government will usurp more than half of the property.”

Incidentally the Congress has a good organizational presence in Malda. In 2019 the Malda South constituency was won by the Congress whereas the Malda North seat was grabbed by the BJP.

Slamming the Congress for planning to infringe the reservation rights of the Scheduled Caste (SC), the Schedules Tribe (ST) and the Other Backward Classes (OBC), Modi said how the Muslims had been included in OBC reservation in Karnataka which would in the ultimate run harm the OBCs in general.

“The Karnataka model will be implemented by the Congress all over the country if they win,” Modi said.
