FROM TEAM EXOTICA

April unveils its rich palette

Legendary American poet TS Eliot in his epic poem The Wasteland  had, in a different philosophical context, described April as the “cruellest month.” Back home for us it is the Spring of hope, festivities and bonding. In this issue of Exotica we traverse through the rich tapestry of our vibrant culture, cuisine, and lifestyle that began with Holi, will now pass through Eid, to lead us to Baisakh. It’s that time of the year when our wheatfields are proudly announcing their harvest of gold, fresh green baby leaves creeping back to adorn the arms of trees left bare by a harsh winter, and festivities across the nation narrating the reason why April is a special month for us.

From the vibrant explosion of colours of Holi on the ghats of Kashi celebrating Rang Bhari Ekadashi with gulal and bhasm, we walk through the streets of Old Delhi’s festivities that is drenching everyone with the festivities during this Holy month of Ramadan, where rituals and traditions blend with the aroma of savouries to mark the joyful spirit of togetherness and gratitude.

While we try and put together this montage of Spring in India, we also nudge our readers to explore new culinary worlds, both traditional and avant garde. From the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan, a mystical Himalayan retreat, we bring to you centuries’ old culinary treats infused with the secret spices and herbs growing in this remote region, untouched and pure. At the other end of the spectrum we lift our readers to the magical realm of the internationally acclaimed digital trailblazers in the culinary world Le Petit Chef and Friends who swing you from the virtual world to the real, their 3D display unfolding a royal four-course international meal. The presentation as spectacular as the meal.

We also welcome our new columnist this month, food connoisseur, Pawan Soni, where he embarks on epicurean adventures, sharing his passion for food and uncovering hidden gems, as a Food Freak.

The Exotica Chronicles this time explores the rugged terrain of Leh and Ladakh as Chandan Mitra drives through winding mountain passes, ancient monasteries, and remote villages, uncovering the timeless beauty and cultural treasures of this Himalayan region while shutterbug Shobori Ganguli captures the enchanting hills for posterity. Enjoy the ride!
