The place of Bengal's literary legend Rabindranath Tagore in reshaping Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th century is well known and his portrayal of emotional characters as a playwright is par excellence. In English drama contest Literati Concurso held on Friday, six schools of the city participated and staged dramas based on scripts written by Tagore.

From his drama titled ‘Bhikharin’, the role of blind woman beggar by student Kanchan of Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School was appreciated by the audience and she won the best actor award.

The host school Delhi Public School Ranipur won the trophy for enacting the play ‘My Lord the Baby’, the second prize was bagged by two schools Mont Fort Roorkee and Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School BHEL which were in a tie. Tagore’s play Dakghar (The Post Office) written in 1912 dealt with death as in his own words, "spiritual freedom" from "the world of hoarded wealth and certified creeds”. The students of classes IX and X set the stage alive through their performances. The narrator of the play 'My Lord the Baby' Aradhya Walia mesmerised the audience with her flawless command on English language.

The vice principal of the DPS Pawinder Singh said, “This was the fifth series of inter school drama contest organised to test the abilities of the students in dialogue delivery, presentation, linguistics and stage acting.

With each passing year, the young talents are coming forward and through such contests the students get encouragement to script their own plays too.” The coordinator and head of English department, DPS, Neelam Bhatt said that choosing Indian playwright Tagore was a step to build up interest of students in our own land’s artists and not only stick to famous western playwrights as Shakespeare only.

Presiding as judges, language experts senior teacher, Veena Kaul and Saroj Bhauguna from Kendriya Vidyalaya shared tips with the students on honing the dramatic skills.
