HIV+ woman unattended in hosp; delivers stillborn

Sunday, 15 December 2019 | PNS | BARIPADA

In yet another incidence of negligence at a Government hospital, a pregnant woman infected with HIV positive was denied treatment and she delivered a stillborn baby. The woman’s condition was stated to be critical.

This was reported from the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College Hospital here.

The woman, wife of one Surai Hembram, a resident of Jamda village, had been admitted to the hospital after she suffered labour pain on Thursday. But the doctors allegedly refused to attend to the patient and she gave birth to the stillborn baby.

According to the woman’s husband, she had first been admitted to the Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, from where she was referred to the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College Hospital. As she was infected with HIV positive, she was left unattended by nurses and doctors. The baby was born dead due to medical negligence, her husband alleged.

Even after delivery, the hospital authorities did not provide treatment to the patient, he further alleged.

The matter came to the fore after the media and various voluntary organisations working in field of HIV/AIDS reached the hospital 24 hours after the incidence. Being pressurised, doctors admitted the patient to an operation theatre.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Naba Kishore Das has ordered an enquiry into the matter and stated that action would be taken against the doctors and other hospital staffs if they are found guilty.
