Himachal sees slight improvement in temperature

The hills of Himachal Pradesh saw an increase in temperature level by one to six degrees above the normal on Sunday.

The Meteorological Department has, however, warned of heavy snowfall and rains in the high and mid hills of Himachal on Monday and Tuesday

The western disturbances--storm systems originating from Caspian Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region-would intensify on January 21, a Met official said.

Most of the prominent tourist towns like Shimla, Narkanda, Kufri, Chail, Manali and Dalhousie, located in mid-hills, may witness snowfall, he said.

According to the Met Department, tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in Himachal with a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius. Shimla, Dalhousie and Kufri recorded minimum temperatures of 7.5 degrees Celsius, 5.1 degrees Celsius and 3.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. The minimum temperature in Kinnaur's Kalpa town was minus 0.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, cold weather conditions continued unabated in most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday, with Gurdaspur being the coldest in the two States at 3.3 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature, however, rose several degrees above normal in various parts of both States.Chandigarh, the joint Capital of Punjab and Haryana, experienced cold weather conditions at 10.6 degrees Celsius.

Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala experienced cold weather conditions at 7.6, 8.8 and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively.Pathankot, Adampur, Halwara, Bathinda and Faridkot recorded their respective lows at 8.9, 10.7, 8.7, 9.5 and 8 degrees Celsius.

In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal recorded their respective minimums at 10.7, 8.7 and 8 degrees Celsius, up to four degrees above normal. Bhiwani, Sirsa, Rohtak and Narnaul recorded minimum temperatures of 9.9, 10.3, 8.4 and 7.5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Met Department has forecast heavy rainfall on January 21 and 22 in Punjab and Haryana.
