Delhi Police Special Cell have arrested a 32-year-old man running an inter-State illegal firearm racket, who was carrying a reward of Rs one lakh over his head. The accused identified as one Safiqul Sheikh was arrested from Khaltipur railway station, Malda district in West Bengal, police revealed Monday.

Police revealed that earlier on August 6 this year, one Mohammad Azimuddin Sheikh and his associate accused Safiqul had come to Delhi to deliver a huge consignment of illegal firearms to Hazi Kayyum. A trap was laid and Mohammad was arrested, however Safiqul was able to evade arrest.

"During investigation, efforts were made to arrest Shafiqul, but he managed to evade his arrest every time. On Monday, information was received by Sub Inspector Ravi Kumar that at around 7 am, the accused would come at Khaltipur railway Station, Malda district, in West Bengal," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

"A trap was laid but sensing police presence the accused tried to slip away, jumping into the drain but was followed by police staffs. After a scuffle, he was arrested and is being produced before court to seek his transit remand to bring him to Delhi," said the DCP.

"During investigation, the accused disclosed that he purchased arms from a person namely Kallu from Munger and supplied them to his contacts in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, with the help of his carriers. He disclosed that he has been involved in this business for last four-five years," said the DCP.

"He had come to meet a receiver in order to finalize a fresh deal, but as soon as he sensed police trap, he changed his way and tried to dodge police," the DCP said, adding that, they were further investigating the matter.
