Film producer Subash Rout passes away

Cuttack: Eminent Odia filmmaker Subash Rout on Saturday passed away following a massive cardiac arrest at his residence at Chhatra Bazaar here. He was 62. Rout was undergoing treatment since a long time for cancer. He is best known for a series of hit movies including ‘Suna Panjuri’, ‘Santan’, ‘Bhagya Hate Dori’, ‘Lakhman Rekha’ and ‘Singha Bahini’.

ECoR holds Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada

Bhubaneswar: To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian Railways has planned to observe ‘Swachhta Hi Seva Pakhwada’ all over the country from September 15 to October 2. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has taken various activities like cleanliness at railway station premises, trains, offices, workshops, maintenance depots, railway hospitals and residential areas. To mark the occasion, railway employees led by ECoR GM Umesh Singh cleaned the surrounding areas of the indoor sports complex and also planted saplings.

Girl killed in road mishap in JSpur

Jagatsinghpur: A girl was killed in a road mishap on the Rahama-Chaula canal road here on Thursday while a speeding motorcycle hit her from behind while she was on her way to her village. The deceased was identified as Pujarani Basantia of Naliapala village under Garei panchayat. She had been rushed to the Manijanga hospital but was later shifted to Cuttack as her condition deteriorated. However, she succumbed to her injuries.

bus overturns in K’put: escape for 40 passengers

Jeypore: About 40 passengers narrowly escaped after a bus they were travelling in turned turtle near Parli under Borigumma block in Koraput district in the wee hours on Saturday. Five passengers, who sustained injuries, were rushed to the Borigumma CHC. One of them was later shifted to the Koraput District Headquarters Hospital as his condition deteriorated. The bus was going to Umarkote from Brahmapur.

Boy swept away in river in Mayurbhanj

Baripada: A 12-year-old boy went missing after being swept away in the Sona river in Kaptipada of Mayurbhanj district on Sunday. Bapun Majhi of Mahishasuri village, after returning home from school, went near the river to watch floodwater. However, he slipped into the river. Fire Services personnel launched a rescue operation but in vain.

Fake notes worth Rs 17K seized; 2 held in K’handi

Bhawanipatna: Busting a fake currency note racket, the Dharmagarh police of Kalahandi district arrested two persons in this connection and seized counterfeit notes worth Rs 17,000 from their possession. The arrested identified as Rajendra Bhoi and Kulmani Naik were later produced before court on Saturday. Rajendra had purchased goats from one Dhaniram Nayak of Tipiguda village on September 12 by paying Rs 17,000 (34 currency notes of 500 denomination).  After finding the notes fake, Dhaniram lodged a police complaint. Rajendra, during interrogation, confessed that he had brought the fake notes from Kulamani of Gadiajor village. Later, the cops arrested both Rajendra and Kulamani.
