Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong support for the imposition of trade tariffs on countries continuing commercial ties with Russia amid the ongoing war, in what appears to be an indirect endorsement of the recent US tariffs imposed on India by the Trump administration.
Without naming any specific nation, Zelenskyy emphasized that statements of solidarity with Ukraine must be followed by “strong actions”, including sanctions, tariffs, and trade restrictions on Russia and
its supporters. “That is why statements by State leaders and institutions must be backed by strong actions – sanctions against Russia and individuals connected with Russia, tough tariffs and other restrictions on trade with Russia,” Zelenskyy said in a public address on Sunday.
“Their losses must be felt. That is what is truly convincing.” His comments came after a massive overnight assault by Russian forces, involving over 800 drones and 13 missiles, which for the first time struck Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers building in Kyiv. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed the attack and praised emergency responders for containing the resulting fire. Zelenskyy also reiterated his position in an interview with ABC News, stating: “I think the idea to put tariffs on the country continuing to make deals with Russia is the right idea.” Zelenskyy’s remarks align closely with the Trump administration’s recent actions against India, which has continued importing Russian oil despite the war. Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump re-imposed 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods and added another 25 per cent penalty specifically linked to India’s energy trade with Russia.
Trump adviser Peter Navarro sparked controversy by labelling the Ukraine conflict “Modi’s war,” accusing India of undermining democratic unity.
“India, you’re the biggest democracy in the world, okay? Act like one... Side with the democracies. Instead, you’re getting in bed with the authoritarians,” Navarro said shortly after the tariffs were enacted. India has strongly rejected the US tariffs, calling them “unjustified and unreasonable.”
In a statement, New Delhi affirmed that it will take all necessary steps to protect its national interest and economic sovereignty.
“Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the Indian Government stated.
Amid escalating Russian aggression, Zelenskyy warned that President Vladimir Putin is “testing the world” and deliberately avoiding any peace negotiations. “Putin does not want negotiations; he is clearly hiding from them… This is a clear sign that Putin is testing the world – whether they will accept or tolerate this,” Zelenskyy stated.
The Ukrainian leader continues to call for greater international resolve, especially from nations that maintain economic ties with Moscow, suggesting that tougher consequences—including tariffs — are essential to ending the war.
