At least 200 people were killed on the outskirts of the Yemeni capital in fighting during the past week between Shia rebels and Sunni militiamen, the Government said on Monday.

Rescue teams retrieved 53 bodies during the day, “bringing the total pulled by ministry teams since September 16 to 200 bodies,” the health ministry said in a statement carried by Saba State news agency.

It said emergency workers also evacuated 461 people wounded in the clashes. The bodies were pulled from the districts of Al-Nahda and Al-Salam. Some were also found at the headquarters of the army’s Sixth Division and the religious Iman University, scenes for fierce fighting, it said.

Ambulance teams were still combing the neighbourhoods, the head of emergency services at the ministry, Ali Saria said in the statement.
