The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency has notified US Congress of its plan to sell 145 M777 155mm light-Weight Towed Howitzers to India at an estimated cost of $885 million.
The sale is said to be in response to India’s request for the advanced Howitzers, with laser Inertial Artillery Pointing Systems, as part of its defence modernisation, enhancing its ability to operate in hazardous conditions.
“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-India strategic relationship and to improve the security of an important partner which continues to be a (force) for political stability, peace and economic progress in South Asia,” the US agency said in its submission to Congress.
The deal will include associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support, it said, noting the proposed sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region and that India will have no difficulty absorbing these weapons into its armed forces.
In accordance with the Indian Defense Procurement Procedure, the US agency anticipates a requirement to negotiate an offset contract with the Government of India.
