The Trump surge continues unabated as the billionaire businessman not only continues to top the list of Republican presidential hopefuls, but has now virtually closed the huge gap with Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton in a newly-released CNN-ORC poll.
Donald Trump is now just 6 points behind Clinton in what CNN calls a dramatic tightening of the race in the space of just one month. In July, Clinton was ahead of Trump by 16 per cent in a similar head-to-head polling match-up.
Commenting on the turnaround, Trump termed the ongoing email controversy ‘devastating’ for Clinton not just for the election. “I think her problem is going to be the criminal (problem),” he said in the context of the FBI probe and media accounts that some classified mails may have been compromised because of Clinton’s use of a private email server.
“I think that Hillary’s going to have a hard time being in the election based on what’s going on with the emails, the servers, maybe even the speeches,” Trump told CNN, adding: “I think it’s going to be a very hard thing for her to overcome.”
Trump fired salvoes not just at Clinton, but also at various presidential hopefuls within his own party, notably Jeb Bush, who used to be the Republican front-runner till a couple of months ago. He went on to call Bush “unelectable”.
