Trump ally in Congress steps aside as Russia probe leader

The Republican leader of the House investigation into Russian interference in the US election announced on Thursday he was stepping aside after being criticised for being too close to President Donald Trump.

Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, had come under fire for briefing Trump on information he had received while keeping members of his own committee in the dark.

Nunes said Republican Representative Mike Conaway would now lead the committee’s investigation.
