Russia has launched its latest nuclear submarine to be armed with a ‘Poseidon’ nuclear drone, also known as ‘doomsday missile’ capable of “wiping out” coastal nations, according to media reports. The nuclear submarine ‘Khabarovsk’ was launched by Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov at a solemn ceremony in the presence of Russian Naval Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev and other top shipbuilding officials in Severodvinsk at Sevmash shipyards.
“Today marks a significant event for us - the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Khabarovsk is being launched from the stern of the renowned Sevmash,” Belousov said in his televised remarks late on Saturday night. Sevmash shipyards had earlier retrofitted INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier for India.
The Russian defense minister emphasized that the submarine carrying underwater weapons and robotic systems will enable Russia to successfully ensure the security of its maritime borders and protect its national interests in various regions of the world’s oceans, according to TASS, the Russian news agency.
The Khabarovsk nuclear submarine was designed by Rubin, the Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering, and is intended to address Navy missions using modern underwater weapons, including robotic systems for various purposes, the Russian Defence Ministry said on its website.
This nuclear submarine would be the carrier of underwater weapons and robotic systems to successfully address the challenges of ensuring the security of Russia’s maritime borders and protecting its national interests in various parts of the world’s oceans, it underscored. Commenting on the launch of the latest nuclear submarine, business daily Kommersant reminded that last week Russia tested the Poseidon underwater drone, equipped with a nuclear propulsion system.
“The Poseidon is capable of exceeding the speed of submarines and modern torpedoes, travelling at great depths and over intercontinental distances. The Khabarovsk-class submarines are expected to be the primary carriers of this weapon,” Kommersant daily said. On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced the successful test of nuclear powered ‘Poseidon,’ which, he said was launched from a mother-submarine and has a nuclear power plant 100 times smaller than the reactor of a strategic submarine.
2 people killed in Ukraine’s Odesa region
Kyiv: At least two people were killed in a drone attack in Ukraine’s southwestern Odesa region, Ukrainian authorities said Sunday. Elsewhere, Russia continued to pummel the country’s energy infrastructure.
Russian drones attacked a car park in the Odesa region on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast in the early hours of Sunday, killing two people, according to the State Emergency Service. Odesa regional Gov Oleh Kiper said that three others were wounded.
Tens of thousands of residents were left without power after Russia attacked the front-line Zaporizhzhia region overnight into Sunday with drones and missiles.
Regional Gov Ivan Fedorov said nearly 60,000 people faced power outages and that two people were wounded in the attacks. He posted photos on Telegram of buildings reduced to rubble. As a result of attacks on Ukraine’s
power grid, several regions faced rolling power cuts on Sunday, Ukraine’s national energy operator, Ukrenergo, said. The strikes were the latest in Russia’s sustained campaign on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as bitter winter temperatures approach.
Ukrainian cities use centralised public infrastructure to run water, sewage and heating systems, and blackouts stop them from working. Attacks aim to erode Ukrainian morale as well as disrupt weapons manufacturing and other war-related activity almost four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbour.
Analysts and officials say that this year Moscow has shifted tactics, targeting specific regions and gas infrastructure. The attacks have grown more effective as Russia launches hundreds of drones, some equipped with cameras that improve targeting, overwhelming air defences - especially in regions where protection is weaker.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike set an oil tanker and infrastructure ablaze at Russia’s Tuapse port, regional officials said Sunday. Images circulating on social media channels appeared to show flames engulfing terminal structures and a tanker at the Black Sea port, with multiple blazes visible across the port area. The Associated Press was unable to independently confirm the footage.
Tuapse is home to a major oil export terminal and a refinery belonging to state-owned Russian oil company Rosneft. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s long-range strikes on refineries inside Russia have reduced Moscow’s oil refining capacity by 20 per cent, citing intelligence from Western governments. Oil exports play a key role in funding Russia’s invasion of its neighbour Ukraine. While Ukrainian weapons take aim at the refineries, new sanctions from the US and the European Union are aiming to cut into Moscow’s oil and gas export earnings.
