Speakers mounted a blistering attack on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Day 1 of the Republican convention in Cleveland, with frenzied sections of the party faithful continuously chanting: “lock her up”.
In what seemed to be a prelude to what is possibly going to be a much nastier run-up to the November election, party managers lined up speakers who kept hammering her over the 2012 Benghazi tragedy and her use of a private email server as Secretary of State during President Barack Obama’s first term.
While former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani accused her of “dereliction of duty” vis-à-vis Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, retired lt Gen Mike Flynn took the attack to another level, commenting that America does not need a “reckless President who believes she is above the law”.
The comment by Flynn, who had served in the Obama administration as Director of Defence Intelligence Agency, sections of the audience began chanting “lock her up”. And the General responded: “You’re damn right. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
