Police: Corporate manslaughter charge possible in london fire

Published on:

Scotland Yard believes there are “reasonable grounds” for a corporate manslaughter charge against the organisations overseeing the Grenfell Tower in west london which went up in flames last month killing at least 80 people.

The two organisations under suspicion are Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation, according to the Metropolitan Police led criminal investigation into the fire.

In a letter sent to survivors and the families of those who died, the Met Police said the decision to identify the two organisations as suspects follows the seizure of documents and witness statements.

“After an initial assessment of that information, the officer leading the investigation has today notified Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation that there are reasonable grounds to suspect that each organisation may have committed the offence of corporate manslaughter, under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007,” the letter reads.
