Nepal’s new Prime Minister will be elected on February 10, with Nepali Congress’ Sushil Koirala the frontrunner for the post after the President asked parties to end the prolonged political deadlock by nominating a premier through majority voting in the Constituent Assembly.

More than ten weeks after electing a new Constituent Assembly, the Parliament’s business advisory committee on Tuesday set February 10 as the date for electing a new PM, according to the secretariat.

President Ram Baran Yadav on Monday called political parties to elect a new PM after the bid to nominate a candidate through consensus under Article 38(1) of the interim constitution failed. Earlier, the President had given a seven-day deadline to install a consensus-based Government with the support of all 30 political parties represented in the legislative-parliament till Sunday After several rounds of negotiations among the major political parties failed to throw up a consensus-based candidate, President Yadav instructed the Constituent Assembly, which also functions as the Parliament to elect the new PM through a majority vote as per Article 38(2) of the interim constitution         PTI
