After getting its first woman President and first woman Parliament Speaker in 2015, Nepal is all set to get its first woman Chief Justice with Justice Sushila Karki expected to take formal charge at the Supreme Court of Nepal next week.
A meeting of Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) on Sunday unanimously endorsed Chief Justice-nominee Karki for the vacant position of Chief Justice at the country’s apex court, making her the first woman to lead the judiciary in this Himalayan nation.
She has been officiating as acting Chief Justice for three months. The Constitutional Council, headed by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, had forwarded her name as next Chief Justice on April 10.
Ahead of her approval, she had furnished her reply against six complaints registered against her at the committee.
