Gandhinagar to become solar city

Gujarat’s capital is all set to become solar city as the State Government has decided to launch a grid-connected rooftop solar power project for residential property owners in Gandhinagar.

The Gujarat Government’s nodal agency for promoting renewable energy Gujarat Energy Development Corporation (GEDA) has launched the Solar Rooftop project to involve people of Gandhinagar in generating solar energy.

“We have kept target to generate minimum 50 MW power during the year 2016-17. GEDA would encourage residents of Gandhinagar to install rooftop solar photovoltaic units," said GEDA director JT Akhani, adding that already some residential property owners have installed such units.

GEDA has received over 150 applications under rooftop solar power project. The biggest advantage for those who want to install solar power project is the electricity generated from it would be off-grid and not connected with meter. The property owners can connect solar panel directly with their power units with the electricity grid.

In fact earlier while announcing solar policy in the year 2015, the state government announced that the project would be grid connected. Hence there was not much response to the project. later on it was decided to make it off-grid and some subsidy plans were given to people to encourage them to install rooftop solar power units on their terraces.
