Egypt on Tuesday ordered immediate trial of Muslim Brotherhood supreme leader Mohamed Badie and other members of the banned group for holding a sit-in at Rabaa Square in 2013 in which hundreds of people protesting at the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi were killed.
The order for the immediate trial was issued by Interim Prosecutor General Ali Omran.
Badie, 72, and other members of the group are facing charges of planning and participating in the armed sit-in in Rabaa el-Adaweya square from June 21 to August 14 in 2013, blocking roads, killing and attempting to kill people and police personnel during the demonstration.
They are also facing charges of damaging public properties, resisting authority, terrorising people and possessing bombs and weapons.
