Rain has brought joy among people and given relief from hot conditions but showers have posed problems as well, especially for locals residing in the areas assigned for dumping garbage of the city.
Following rains, stinking smell from these garbage points is making passing by the site unbearable. Locals fear that this could lead to different diseases, mainly water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid as well as skin infections.
The city has several dumping areas including one at Chandralok crossing, Manmohan park, Katra and Muthiganj in which garbage from different localities is brought and then taken to Baswar for recycling.
For several years, these dumping areas have caused nuisance among the people living in the area or the regular travellers of the route. These areas, which are located in the residential areas of the city have always created a barrier for commuting whether it is due to the scattered garbage or the stray animals surrounding the dumping areas.
The garbage is mainly collected from the houses of the areas near to these open dumps. Tons of garbage, on a daily basis is dumped at these sites. Prior to rains, these sites were cleaned and were not causing much smell but now that the rains have lashed the entire city a number of times in the past few days, the foul smell emanating from piles of garbage has become unbearable.
As the dumping areas are open, stray animals, including cows, dogs, buffaloes etc scatter the garbage across the road. The locals too throw the garbage on the pile following which the roads become dirty. Although when the open dumping area at the Chandralok crossing was visited, a team of Prayagraj Municipal Corporation was busy cleaning it with the help of JCB machines and loading garbage on bigger trucks.
However, locals are apprehensive that given the past practice of the PMC, garbage will still be thrown at the same site and with rains and stray cattle, the pile of garbage will again stink. “The dumping site should be shifted from this place and should be taken out from the city limits. Until then, there should be regular cleaning with bleaching powder and spray against insects etc should be carried out”, said Praveen Mishra, a local.
Commenting on the issue, Nagar Swasth Adhikari of PMC, Abhishek Singh said, “We have been cleaning garbage in all the localities, especially the one where chunk of garbage is thrown, on a daily basis. The problem does gets complicated during rains, but PMC has expedite the process of cleaning such sites”.
