LONDON: Britain's most high-profile broadcaster, comedian, and Hollywood actor turned influencer Russel Brand was convicted in one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by a London court on Thursday after 8 hours and 30 minutes of deliberations.

Brand was described as a ruthless sexual predator, and prosecutors said he was obsessed with sex and used women to satisfy his needs, viewing them as commodities. The sentencing is scheduled for Monday, 9th November, where he would face a prison term.

Former husband of US pop star Katy Perry, he rose to fame in the 2000s in Britain, hosting a spin-off show to "Big Brother" on Channel 4. During the 2000s, he became a regular fixture on television and radio, and went on to star in a number of films in Hollywood.

The public legal scrutiny surrounding Russell Brand accelerated in September 2023, following a joint journalistic investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches, which brought forward allegations of predatory sexual behaviour spanning between 2004 and 2013. In response to the reporting, London's Metropolitan Police launched a comprehensive investigation, interviewing more than 100 witnesses and gathering extensive documentary evidence.

While Brand publicly denied the accusations, asserting that all of his past sexual encounters were fully consensual and describing the scrutiny as a targeted attack, prosecutors subsequently filed formal criminal charges. The proceedings concluded at Southwark Crown Court in November 2026, where a jury convicted the 51-year-old in four cases, while acquitting him of two additional counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault.

The rape conviction centred on an incident in 2009, when Brand invited a female fan to his London townhouse and forced her into non-consensual sexual intercourse despite her clear resistance. Victims recounted suffering prolonged emotional and psychological trauma, explaining that the significant imbalance in power and the fear of public disbelief initially prevented them from approaching law enforcement.

The convictions covered a 2004 incident in which Brand grabbed a woman without consent, as well as a sexual assault against a female employee at London’s Choice FM radio station around 2004 or 2005, committed in the presence of his personal entourage. In another instance during a 2009 Channel 4 production, members of his team informed a female coworker that filming would not continue unless she gave Brand a massage, after which Brand physically assaulted her by forcing his head into her lap.

Brand had claimed that he never had any non-consensual sexual encounters, and the charges are based on misremembered or reframed incidents after the incidents were made public in Times and Sunday Times reports.

He pleaded not guilty to three charges of rape, three of sexual assault, and one attempted indecent assault, in allegations spanning over 10 years from 1999.

Brand will now face jail and more action as he is still facing investigations into two more alleged sexual assaults, one involving a then 16-year-old-girl.
