3 US teens detained in Germany for trying to join ISIS

Published on:

lured by Internet jehad propaganda, three American teenage girls, of Somali and Sudanese descent, skipped school and made for Germany en route to Turkey to join the ISIS militants, but their plans went awry as they were intercepted at the Frankfurt airport and sent them back home.

For the US authorities, the abortive bid by the girls brings into sharp focus once more the problem of homegrown militant cells. Earlier reports have brought to light instances of several young American men of Somali stock having left Minnesota to join the ISIS.

A law enforcement official told ABC News that the latest incident is part of the worrisome trend of “disaffected youth” who are being radicalised. The girls are all from the Denver area. Aged 15 to 17, they have not been identified yet. But the authorities said two of them are sisters and are of Somali descent. The third is originally from Sudan.
