Composer Tanishk Bagchi talks about his journey and forthcoming projects as Team Viva listens in
For music composer Tanishk Bagchi it all started in 2015 as his debut song, Banno Tera Swagger, catapulted him into the big league of composers. The song hit the right chords with the audience, and in no time the track was echoing at all party circuits. While he was basking in the success of his Bollywood debut, Dharma Productions gave him a chance to add soul to the music of Kapoor & Sons with the soulful rendition Bolna.
“My journey started with Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Before this, I used to produce and arrange music for TV shows, including Dance India Dance and Thapki Pyar Ki. Yes, the road was tough but I knew my destination and also was aware of the fact that there were obstacles lined up one after the other. But I built bridges in-between with hope and positivity.
Starting from Kolkata to Mumbai was a big learning and earning process for me. Because money and music both were important for me to survive. I worked at Sanskar channel as a recordist and simultaneously I was also grabbing ideas from different gurus in Mumbai to make my technical sides stronger. A firm grip on remixes and production was my motive. And finally when I achieved my goals, I stepped into music composing and got my first break with Vayu,” he told us.
Tanishk originally wanted to be a pilot, how did music become his first preferenceIJ
“I always wanted to be a pilot. But I started learning music when I was very young. I learnt piano when my fingers were too small to even reach the keys. But surviving with music is just like dying out of hunger because musicians don’t get their dues and I didn’t want this to happen so I thought of being a pilot which unfortunately couldn’t happen as I was from a middleclass family. So my only hope was music and also looking at my mom and dad working and living on music, I felt I should keep my family legacy alive. So I stepped into it.”
Talking about the early musical influences and inspirations he said, “I have gurus at my own place, my mom and dad. My dad is into Western classical and mother is an Indian classical singer. So, I’ve grown up listening to almost all genres of music. Also Rahman sir’s music influenced me a lot during my learning process.
My own life is like a movie with short stories of heart breaks and heart fillings. So I don’t need to see movies to get inspired, I watch myself and put them to words and tune it to my life.”
The composer has also recreated 90’s hit Humma Humma with AR Rahman. Speaking on that he gushed, “I cant explain in words how I felt when my name was there with Rahman sir. It feels great. God bless him and his soulfull music.”
About his future projects, he said, “I just want to do good work and I want to stay for long. Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Half Girlfriend, Munna Michael these are my forthcoming releases.”
