‘Cinema can bring people together’

Actor Amitabh Bachchan made a strong pitch for cinema as a unifying medium in order to disintegrate the system that divides people on the lines of colour, caste and religion.

Bachchan, who was speaking at the inaugural session of Indian Panorama section at the ongoing 50th edition of the International Film Festival of India, said that the darkened cinema hall is home to diverse sets of people drawn by the magic of cinema.

“I hope we continue to make films which can disintegrate this odd system of keeping sides due to colour, caste and religion, bringing us all into one community,” he said.

‘I am keen on taking up roles that will give me the space and opportunity to really invest, get my teeth into the character and explore it. I want to take up roles that will allow me the kind of level of performance which I was able to experience in Bharat and Zero. I need to now make sure that I only connect with films and characters that challenge and inspire me to bring out a new aspect.’

Ekta Kapoor will co-produce the forthcoming film Pagglait with Guneet Monga. The film stars Sanya Malhotra.

Monga, who won an Oscar in the Best Documentary (Short Subject) category for producing Period. End Of Sentence last year, is among “the most relevant voices” in Indian cinema, said Ekta.

“When I heard the film’s concept, I knew we had to do this,” said Ekta, making the announcement on Guneet's birthday.

Guneet added, “We are glad to bring a concept as quirky as Pagglait on screen.”

‘Possibility of Jumanji 3’

Hollywood actor-producer Dwayne Johnson says that the prospect of coming out with a third film in the Jumanji franchise totally depends on the audience reaction to forthcoming second part, Jumanji: The Next Level.

When asked about the plans for the third part, Johnson said, “That depends on the audience. When we made the first one, we thought that the concept was unique and we will see what happens. We never thought of making part two. So, same thing applies here too. We will keep our eyes open and heads to the ground and see how the second part fares.”

The world of Chris Van Allsburg's book Jumanji, found its way to the silver screen in 1995. Robin Williams was its main lead.
