With changing weather, skin care becomes a big challenge. Dr Dinyar Workingboxwalla tells I Kaur that one needs to understand the skin before acting on it

Tattering, oiliness, acne, blackheads, dryness are all examples of damaged skin. If you have been to dermatologists and still not managed to cure your skin, Dr Dinyar is ready to help with his book, Beauty Unleashed. It is a byproduct of his own experience and skin-related challenges. “I had really bad skin and tried several cures. Finally I decided to take things in my own hand and began healing it.” HowIJ

“There are 3 Rs involved –rectify, restore and rejuvenate.” According to him, there is no shortcut to beauty.Dr Dinyar explained how he covered the miles. “I researched and used things available. After several experiments, I understood what suited me. You are the best judge of  your skin. You must invest time to understand it,” he said.

“If you eat and drink junk, your face will replicate that. But if you eat healthy fruits and multi-coloured foods,  you will automatically see a change.” Not many people know, the dermatologist said, that slow, deep breathing helps the body and skin.

“Most people breathe twelve to fifteen times a minute. It is out of sync with the natural rhythms of the body. Your heartbeat, blood vessels, brain waves operate on set rhythm. They align with an ideal breathing rate of six breaths a minute. Deep breathing reduce the risk of heart disease, improves lung function, oxygenates the blood and improves your ability to exercise!”

He added, “It helps to get the body rid of acids, toxins and carbon dioxide and flood it with energising oxygen. The more oxygen you bring, the more energy every cell can produce,” he said.It is important to use beauty products considering the skin texture. “

“Oily skinned people end up drying their skin. People with predominantly oily skin  should learn how to rebalance themselves. Oily skin also needs moisturising, but in the right quantity and with the right product.”

He said the most neglected part of our body is hands. “My personal secret to protect against premature aging is the use of pure  Vitamin E oil-based cream. It keeps hands smooth and soft. It also heals cuts and irritations overnight. You can soak hands in warm olive/almond oil for ten minutes, then massage this into hands.“Dab off extra oil with a tissue and put cotton gloves for an hour. Its less time-consuming than a manicure.”

As for peel off masks and instant clean-ups, the skin specialist quipped, “These provide temporary hydration. The face gets the feel of being fresh but internally there is no change in texture. The long-lasting effect lacks  such things.” He also gave us gyaan on hair loss. He asserted, “There is concrete medical evidence that stress, regardless of origin contributes to balding. The truth is under stress, whether we push deadlines for a major project at work, or strive to get ninety eight per cent in exams, we let basic health habits go.”

He recalled, “I remember a young girl of fourteen suffered excessive hair thinning. Her family had high expectations regarding grades. This is common with teens. Personal and physical stress causes hormonal imbalance, excessive hairfall and visible hair thinning.”

“A combination of good diet, correct hair care products, plus right routine, will make hair beautiful. Eat lots of lean meat, especially liver which is high in iron and B12, and seafood, which contains the all-important iodine.A daily course of vitamins and oil capsules may help if hair is dry and brittle,” he said. He is working on another book.
