Singapore-based artist P Gnana’s paintings are all about searching for harmony in a relationship
The world is never static and neither is life. Everything in the face of the Earth is in motion — always. Emotion, too changes. The love that brings two people together is very different from the love a mother has for her child.
Singapore-based artist P Gnana has delved into the varied emotions that a person goes through in his exhibition titled Emotion in Motion. It is displayed at Art Spice Gallery in The Metropolitan Hotel and spa.
Curated by Vidhya Gnana Gouresan and conceived by the illustrious artist P Gnana, the show reveals an artistic maturity that has enabled the artist to seriously focus, ‘explain’ and ‘speak’ about his subject matter. The works in this exhibition are a reflection of his reactions and explorations in the subject of the human relationship, or rather the lack of a relationship in today’s environment. Relationships, especially emotional and personal ones, are not as strong as they used to be, or once deemed to be.
Gnana points out, “The search for harmony or the desire to cultivate harmony in a relationship is lost today. Perhaps, this is because the way to bring about this harmony has become a difficult question that does not seem to have a definite answer.” Therefore, he uses the question mark (IJ) as an identifiable symbol that has straightforward implications of the confused state.
The arrows in Gnana’s paintings symbolically represent a certain path that his inner reflections have brought about, and they also represent the need to direct relationships towards a path that guarantees harmony. As an extension of the search for harmony, he has divided his canvas into bars or sections to create a sense of balance and a certain order. Also, the divisions project the relaxation of restrictions that prevent the positive growth of the human relationship. Gnana also has very carefully and mellifluously integrated influences from the primeval Yin-Yang philosophy that create a balance, and therefore harmony, through continuously embracing each other.
Speaking about the exhibition, Babita Gupta, director of the gallery says, “The artist has portrayed pure relationships that are not affected by negative forces or influences. The themes and subjects of his paintings are apparently of a universal nature. Regardless of how exhaustively his popular theme of the mother and the child has been utilized in the history of western and eastern art, Gnana continues to project his great emotional affiliation towards this theme, which is a perfect example of a pure and selfless relationship. This is something that comes uncultivated and straight from his heart. To view such ideas, emotions, realizations and more in a figurative language will be a blissful experience for the viewers”.
