With chic interiors and popular music, Depot 48 is any other cafe, not much different from the original 29. By Jigyasu Joshi
Gracing the N block market of GK-1, this one unlike other restaurants in the vicinity, doesn’t hold too many props. The décor is minimalistic with a hint of sass. The design ensures privacy to every table and the music won’t bother you much. A certain part of seating provides you a view of the market, in case you like such views. They served us the complimentary house made lavash, along with fresh and spicy tomato salsa, which we nibbled on as we explored the menu.
However, the menu is not as impressive as the décor or the lavash. We started with three cheese cigar rolls served with smoked red pepper sauce and Spanish artichoke and spinach dip, which was served with homemade tortilla chips. Disappointing is not even the word, the rolls were almost unstuffed with the filling and oily too. The crust wasn’t crunchy either.
It was time for sliders now. The vegetarian version served three miniature burgers, namely, Calcutta, Vada Pao and the Jack fruit. The first two were average in taste and had nothing exclusive about them. The Jackfruit burger however, excited us with some flavours with fried plantain, avocado mash and caramelised onions working for it. The non-vegetarian platter again had three miniature versions of chicken, lamb and pork burger. The chicken burger had a crisp patty with scrumptious bacon and barbecue sauce. The lamb was tad dry and less on spices. The shredded barbequed pork burger was better with lots of pork bits in the sauce and spiced pineapple salsa topped with a slice of grilled pineapple. Next on our table was Mac n Cheese with mushroom and pumpkin adding much flavours. The dish by far was the only thing we really liked or call it our love for the soul food after all.
For desserts, we ordered a classic waffle served with vanilla ice cream and the dessert of the day which was a chocolate pudding served in a jar with vanilla. The waffles were eggless and freshly baked, crunchy on the outside and soft and airy inside. The chocolate pudding was average but managed to taste good, almost. Depot 48 is an uninspiring place with nothing to write home about.
