Yami Gautam and Pulkit Samrat started their career with television and then made a splash in Bollywood. In a conversation with Arjita Mishra, they trace their journey in the industry and advise aspiring actors to have clarity
As we entered in the room, both Yami Gautam and Pulkit Samrat greeted us with smiling faces. During the conversation, they told us that they will be seen together again in a T- Series film Junooniyat. They also shared their journey from TV to the film industry. Excerpts from the interaction:
Tell us something about the film and your role and how it is going to be different from your previous films...
Pulkit Samrat- This is a love story, truly soulful and intense love. It tells the journey of Akash and Shruti. People are going to relate themselves with the journey of Akash and Shruti because it’s the purest emotion depicted in very beautiful manner. It talks about the concept that we usually discuss — to find our soulmates. But, is it easy to find your soulmate or is it destiny, the biggest factor which plays an important roleIJ So, this is what the film is all about.
Yami Gautam- In the movie, we belong to a small town called Tanakpur. And Shruti is a small town girl with really big dreams in her eyes. She is someone who believes that no matter what happens, nothing can snatch your smile and happiness. But as the story unfolds, she realises that there is much more depth to her character, emotion and her vulnerability.
Both of you started your career with television and then you have made it to the big screen. So, did you find it difficult to make the shiftIJ
PS: It just happened organically. It is your work and most importantly, it is your audience. It depends on solely on the audience where they want to see us. Suppose, tomorrow, if they want to see me on the small screen, I will definitely work there. My main motive is to entertain, medium doesn’t matter. I am very thankful to my audience that they like me and I will never disappoint them.
YG : For me, I think I took a little time in the transition. Of course, I have a lot of respect for TV because I learnt everything from there because I never went to any acting institution. I just came to Mumbai from Chandigarh and I learnt acting while doing television. But one thing I was very sure of, that I am never going to do compromise with anything or never do anything which I don’t believe in just to earn money. I left television at a point where I thought that I am not satisfied with my roles and characters. I took a break. I was not in the position at that time where I could just sit at home and choose what I wanted to do but, I still chose my roles. I even started to do commercials. As it is shown in movies that people go to small banners and give auditions, I did that too. Then I got advertisements and during that course, I gave audition for Vicky Donor and got selected for that.
Is there any difference that you find between the industriesIJ
PS: I think there is certain sword that is hanging when you work on television because the telecast has to go. The level of detailing goes little down. But you have a pressure and you tackle that pressure to deliver the best you can because you have less time and that teaches you a lot. And when you come to films, there is a lot of detailing that goes and of course, there is a deadline because you have to finish it on a certain release date but still you have some time as compared to TV. I think whatever I have learnt from television has helped me a lot.
Yami, your next film is with Hrithik Roshan...
I am very excited and I think, to get this opportunity at this stage is an advantage for me . I am really looking forward to shoot with him. I think it is going to be a very special film for me and I will work really hard for this.
