The cape returns

The cape returns

As the 27th edition of the FDCI India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter’16 is around the corner, Team Viva finds out from designers that capes and darker shades will rule the ramp this season

Whether it was Jennifer lopez dazzling in that yellow cape gown with a high slit, or Emilia Clarke (who shot to fame courtesy her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen or Khaleesi in the show, Game of Thrones) donning the same look but with a darker shade — capes seemed to have swooned us all with the way they were carried by several celebrities sashaying down the red carpet at the recently held Golden Globe Awards.

If you have missed it by any chance then we must tell you that for the forthcoming India Fashion Week, designers are going to bring in trends like capes, denims and a lot more back to the ramp in their Autumn/Winter season.

We spoke to some of the designers who gave us a few details of what we can expect from their season’s collection. While on one hand Samant Chauhan is playing with more colours than he usually does, Debarun Mukherjee is following his trend of bringing a touch of Bengal with the revival of the nakshi kantha embroidery. Ritu Kumar on the other hand claims that denims are here to stay.

Samant Chauhan

Since I do not play with a lot of colours, for the forthcoming line for the Autumn/Winter collection, I will display darker shades of the natural fabric. There will be a lot of layers but the collection will be more abstract than last years. I will also be using plenty of jeans material in the collection. Though I don’t wish to divulge much on my collection, but the fabric that I would be using a lot this time is bhagalpuri silk.

Ritu Kumar

I think, for the forthcoming Autumn-Winter season, anything that is not hugging your body very tightly is going to be in vogue.

It can be anything — from your structured yet over-sized silhouettes, boyfriend jackets or pants, anti-fit pullovers, capes or asymmetric throw-ons. As far as colours are concerned, we are definitely going to be looking at plenty of darker shades this season. A lot of hues like navy blue, brown, scarlet, olive et al. are the colours this fall-winter.

If I were to talk about the fabric that will take centre stage at the rap for the collection, I believe, denims aren’t going away anytime soon. So it looks like we’ll be seeing lots of them in winter 2016-17 collection.

Debarun Mukherjee

I am trying to revive the nokshi kantha, the indigenous Bengal embroidery which has almost vanished and for that I have tied up with a national award winning weaver.

My line at the fashion week will don a festive look because I will be playing with contrasting shades. It is not colour contrast but the contrast will be in the shades. like if I am using grey, the dress will be in charcoal grey and pastel grey with silver embroidery. The idea is to play with light and dark. I will be playing with a lot festive dark colours like blue, green, red and purple. However, the very bright ones, I will tone down with a few pastel shades and then add some bling with gold embroidery. For fabrics, the line will have silk, tussar, handloom fabrics and products because I work with handloom.

For me, I think capes will, undoubtedly  rule the fashion scene for Autumn-Winter. Capes in different fabrics can be combined with all kind of silhouettes. This will also enhance  the overall look, thus  making the person look dapper and stunning.

According to me, the colour pallate, which will be trending this Autumn/ Winter, will be earthy tones. It can include colours like olive, coppertone, rust, baby blue amongst others.  I think, more than anything, comfort will be the mantra this season.  Also, a woman carries her confidence in her body.  Feminine body has always been and will always be a strong position for any fashion week.  This is the reason why feminine body in all its forms have been and will always be embraced irrespective of size.
