Ghai shared more about his movie.
You have launched many fresh faces who went on to become superstars. Tell us about the fascination of working with fresh peopleIJ
I want people to see the story, not the star package. This has always been my mantra. I believe when you work with established stars in your movie, it is a luxury, and working with new faces is an experiment. It is the joy of experimenting that fascinates me to work with new artistes.
What was special about MishtiIJ
I had seen shots of Mishti and called her for an audition. I gave her a two-page dialogue and told her she has half an hour to prepare it. Mishti returned to my room five minutes later and I thought she would say that it is impossible to prepare such a long script in 30 minutes. But instead of saying No, she said, ‘I am ready.’ I was impressed by her readiness and I knew I had found my Kaanchi.
Have commercial failures in the last few movies affected youIJ
Yes, my last few movies failed but what I always keep in mind is the honesty required on my part to execute and develop a movie. While making a movie I am not thinking about `100-200 crore target to be achieved but instead I hope that the audience understands and appreciates my thoughts in the same manner which I bear in mind.
What inspires you as a filmmakerIJ
I never try to make an extraordinary film. My films are simple. I have always aimed to connect with the audience with simple stories.
What are your plans for your film instituteIJ
My film institute is my passion. Hundreds of students are studying there who in the future would produce and direct thousands of films. I am more proud of my film school than I am of my movies.
Describe Kaanchi in one line.
