The actor is back with the sequel of Yamla Pagla Deewana. He talks about creating a rip-roaring comedy, packed with action and everything that the Deols are known for
Despite the fact that he almost had a nil onscreen presence after his last hit, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and he is not the one who would frequent the red carpet events, Sunny Deol has a huge fan following. There were over hundreds of people, mostly guys, who crowded the stair ways and the entrance at the Select Citywalk mall, Saket, to get the glimpse of the hero. It was the craze to see the real He-Man of Bollywood, who without any six or eight pack abs became the fitness and action icon in the industry, that made the people wait for hours. The actor was here to promote Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, the sequel that features the trio — Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby. The film is produced by the veteran actor Dharmendra, written by Sunny’s wife and son Karan Deol is the assistant director. “It has been like a family affair and YPD 2 is completely different from the first one,” informed Sunny, who plays a recovery officer in the film. “The story idea was by my wife and it was set in UK. Since we all know that recession has hit the Western economy hard the story was about this recovery agent in UK, who is hired by the banks to recover money from the Asians. My character helps the families in their business and helps them repay the bank. The character of Bob and dad are based in Benaras, and whenever we get in touch they try to bluff me. They continue to fool me until we meet in UK and then the story takes a turn,” he said.
The actor added, “I wanted to make sequels ever since my movies like Ghayal did well. I used to watch Hollywood films and think why can’t we have sequels. But I was waiting for the right story and I didn’t want the sequel to be worst than a prequel.”
The actor, who has always been known for his action sequences, will be returning to the screen after a long time. “I am not the one who will run after trends or will do anything just for the sake of money. Business is important but in my career I have never been governed by money or by others. We like to have dignity and like to stick to what we are. We don’t like to sell ourselves. Today people are not ashamed of revealing or talking about anything. May be that is the culture or trend of the society today but we will not do it ever. I should be known for my work and not how I promote myself and what I do. I don’t want to be known for bad things in life ever. I should be known for my work. People should love me for my work. And if my work is not good they should kick me out,” he said.
The world might run after a 100 crore success formula but Sunny said, “I don’t run after numbers. Business is crucial but it is only now that we measure it in terms of money. My films did business of 100 crore that time, so you can evaluate their success now.”
Sunny is working on Ghayal Returns and has other films too are in pipeline.
He will continue doing action and giving people what they want from him. “I have never been a person who runs after abs or fitness, but I love action, may be because when I started doing films action was really action. We did our stunts without duplicates and as a sportsperson I loved that. It was thrilling,” he ended.
