There is a saying that nobody loves to travel more than an Indian. And it is the travel bug that has bit Indian travellers in a way that a whopping 60 per cent of them have been found to prefer travelling alone. The survey conducted by Groupon India, has delved into a backpackers mind to bring out many such secrets. The Confessions of a Traveller report suggests that this year most people rushed to the hills of Northern India during peak summer, while many more are gearing up to make a trip during the festive season. “It is extremely pleasing to know that travel is topping the Indian consumer’s list, with over 97 per cent going on one or more domestic holiday in a year. With our exciting and wide variety of travel deals, and the findings of this survey, we are aiming to effectively tap the Indian traveller, and offer them memorable travel experiences,” said Ankur Warikoo, CEO of the company.

Travelling styles

While 45 per cent of Indian travellers prefer travelling with family, followed by 32 per cent with friends, a surprising 64 per cent are open to the idea of travelling solo. Perhaps in hope of indulging in some quality ‘me’ time to discover their life’s calling. With domestic travel on an all time high, almost 97 per cent of respondents are undertaking one or more domestic trips a year. Cheaper air fares and hotel rates have not only made international travel more appealing to people who love to taste foreign waters but have made it affordable too.

Indians do everything in style and travelling is no exception. The survey also focussed on the 41 per cent of travellers who prefer making an itinerary in advance, as opposed to picking up their bags and leaving. However, the survey also showed that 47 per cent chose to travel on cue, depending on the situation. That apart 56 per cent of travellers were found to be travellers at heart and only eight per cent preferred playing safe and visit places which are frequently visited by all.

Going wild

While some like to play it safe and be prepared, condoms do not make it to the top five travel must-haves for 64 per cent Indian travellers. Attracted to the idea of romantic escapades in a foreign land, 21 per cent respondents are open to the idea of risqué one-night stands while on holiday and an identical percentage of respondents confessed to having drunk-dialled someone while on vacation.

Guilt free gluttony

Without having to worry about weight and fat deposit, 70 per cent of travellers go for the grub. Most respondents choose to gorge on local delicacies while travelling, but a significant number prefer to play safe and stick to known cuisines. With search giant Google at the fingertips, travelling has never been easier. From looking up destinations, seeking advice on places to visit, local eating joints to booking hotels and paying bills, Google has emerged as the top choice for travellers.
