Sound of the soul

Sound of the soul
Published on:

After having regular jamming sessions in college, Rohit, Bhaanu, Abhay and Abhijit came up with Soul’d Out band in 2011. They recently performed at Escape Summer Vibe and spoke to P Gupta about their music and inspirations

How did you come up with this nameIJ

The name of the band was initially thought by Bhaanu and Chetan (guitarist and vocalist) while listening to a James Brown song, Souled Out. They thought that such a name would be relevant to our music.

Do you prefer composing music to playing known tracksIJ

Nothing can beat the feeling of seeing the crowd enjoy our own songs. So playing originals is always our priority. However, we do play a cover or two, depending on the type of venues we are playing at. Covers  usually come in to place at pubs or corporate shows, while we play our originals at music festivals.

What was the incisive moment in your careerIJ

It was when the band got back after a year long break-up, this time with more motivation, determination and dedication. Since then, we have adapted to each other’s style of music.

What is the hardest thing about being a bandIJ

It is sticking together and accepting each others’ styles. Good music can only be made if a band is flexible and has accommodating members, with a certain amount of discipline and dedication.

What has been the inspiration for your bandIJ

The band comes from a variety of musical influences and inspirations. They range from jazz to blues to pop to the vintage Bollywood era to alternative rock. It is this versatility that brings a unique element into the band’s music.

Has anyone of you ever considered changing to another instrumentIJ

Each member of the band has played a number of instruments before they chose to play the one they are best at. Each of them has taken years of experimenting before locking down on one instrument. Changing their current scenario is unlikely.

What is the most bizarre thing you’ve encountered during a performanceIJ

One of the most bizarre incidents was when Chetan’s (vocalist) vocal chords were  badly damaged and he could not sing at all. The band had a show at Blue Frog the same day. Sajal (bassist) went to pick up Chetan, insisting that he would sing. Sajal and Chetan also met with an accident on the way, after which they finally made it to the show, where the band had called their college friends to fill in for a song or two each. Surprisingly, the show was a hit and the crowd turnout was fabulous.

What do you love about musicIJ

It is our love for music that unites this band. It appeals to all of us at very different levels. To some, it is a remedy after a hard day, while for some, it may be as reflexive as breathing, and others might consider it an escape into pure bliss. Music gives us inner peace and joy which we try to pass on to our listeners. Inspite of coming from varied musical backgrounds, the common passion for music keeps the band together. Such is the power of music.

Who plays the lyricist in the bandIJ

Most of the composing ideas originate from the more melodious ones, Bhaanu (guitar), Abhay (saxophone) and Chetan (vocals). Bhaanu and Chetan have been writing almost all the lyrics. Abhijit (drums) and Sajal (bass) then rework on those lyrics to make them complement the music.
