Kapil Sharma recently bagged the Entertainer of the Year award. He shared with Iknoor Kaur how small-town upbringing helped him hone his comic skills

Is it his Hinglish that makes you writhe in mirth every Sunday night or his wit that cramps you up in amusementIJ There is no dearth of comedians in our country but only a few can demean you and make you laugh at the same time — Kapil Sharma being one of them. However, it might come as a shock  that the same man who doesn’t even let guests finish a sentence and interrupts into every conversation making even the biggest stars laugh at themselves, is in reality a man of few words.

He likes to pull your leg once in a while and will even twist words to make them funny, but when it comes to him talking about anything related to his life, he prefers to be reserved. Therefore, when we asked him about his recent victory as the Entertainer of the Year by CNN-IBN, he kept himself precise. “It’s a big honour because the people nominated for it were big stars. I didn’t think I would get it. It is the love of the people that keeps me going,” he said.

A little probe did let him loose though. He added, “This is a season for the aam aadmi. If the Aam Aadmi Party can win, why can’t an aam aadmi’s show win, tooIJ”

As a child Kapil was always a funny boy, but he never intended to be a comedian. “I wanted to be a singer, but professionally, comedy came my way before singing. Now when I look back I realise that I wouldn’t have become a great singer,” he shared.

Kapil was born and brought up in Amritsar. He feels that his upbringing has played a big role in bringing him here. He elaborated, “I was not brought up in an environment where my parents wanted me to become a big man and earn a lot of money. I have always been bindass. I never think too much.”

This straight-forward attitude is what forms his humour as well, he said. “There is no training one can do in comedy. It comes from within. I think the fact that people love me is what has made me a good comedian. I just see the audience and the humour comes out automatically. I don’t know how. I haven’t figured it out yet,” he quipped.

As of now the comedian-actor is busy with his show Comedy Nights with Kapil and has no plans of doing anything else for a while.
