Shiamak Davar writes about why modern dance is often mistaken for contemporary and how reality shows are giving the  genre a new lease of life

On modern dance being mistaken as contemporary

Modern is a specific style of dance that breaks away from any fixed form or structure and is a free expression of emotions through movement. Contemporary on the other hand is more or a combination of styles that could include modern, jazz, ballet elements. While both styles give freedom of expression, modern focusses on the emotional while contemporary more on creating new techniques and styles.

A new languge, not a new jargon

Modern is a break away from all the rules of ballet and classical forms. It is a free interpretation of the inner emotion and allows the dancer to express themselves without being bound by rues.

Influence of gymnastics

Honestly, I’d rather see more dance than gymnastics. Dance is not always or only about leaps, turns and jumps. It’s more about interpreting the music into movement, about making the story that the music says come alive.

Modern dance  at crossroads or new beginningIJ

This style came into the forefront because of reality shows which is a very good thing. Now the awareness about these styles will come about amongst dance enthusiasts, and with training they will gain a greater understanding. So I’m very happy that the reality shows have made this happen.

Scope for innovation

Oh, it’s being accepted very well. In fact my style of indo contemporary and modern work that I’ve been doing with my Dance Company and students has been received very well. People recognise it as a unique style that they now refer to as the Shiamak Style. So, yes people are very aware and willing to try it.
